The Curse Of The College Bombsite!

Time for some little tips on cleaning and organizing those dorm rooms! You might think you rank high as one of the cleanest and tidiest people in the world – but are you really prepared for dorm life? For me, there is ‘free’ time and ‘spare’ time. Your studies come first, followed by a free time and then if you could turn 24 hour days into 25 hours – you might even have some ‘spare’ time. Okay, what I am trying to say is that time is limited and even putting books away or making the bed seem to be a challenge on your schedule.

You have to take into account too, the character you share your dorm with. In my experience, it is very rare that two or more cleanly souls get paired up in the same dorm. Furthermore, with your new found world and the absence of a nagging Mom – there are so many more things that rank higher on your priority list than cleaning up the empty pizza boxes.

Good habits need to be implemented early on if you want to stand half a chance; discuss with those sharing your dorm about a possible rota where cleaning the shared rooms are taken in turns – this evidently makes it easier on everyone and has practical meaning too. Don’t live in fear of your roommates mounting dirty sock pile or the remnants of old milk in the kitchen sink – you have to speak up if something is bothering you.

Most will be understanding, some might throw obscenities your way – but at least you expressed yourself and if worst comes to worst you can always try to get a room change. Just don’t expect it to be much better than the last!
