Studying Abroad: Should It Be Made Mandatory?

I’m very interested to hear your thoughts on this – do you think studying abroad should be made mandatory for college students? I spent some time abroad during the summer breaks and soaked up as much culture as possible in the short time, but having insisted that I stay on the home-ground for my studies – I can now say that I wish I’d been more thoughtful when making that decision. It wouldn’t have been as easy as staying on the motherland, but I often find myself envious of those who did take the risk and benefited immensely from it; in more ways than one might I add.

Studying abroad gives students the opportunity to discover a new culture whilst earning a degree at the same time – kind of like hitting two birds with one stone. A good friend of mine spent a year in Hong Kong, and I never heard her so happy and fulfilled. I noticed how her positive energy for life increased every time we chatted on the phone, and I couldn’t help but feel like she was growing as a person, much more rapidly than I was. You may think that the time will come when you can travel across the world – but time flies and with most of being in debt after college. Work is inevitable.

So you work a year or two, and then you go, but still the freedom and the lust is not so great as what it could have been. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still traveling now from time to time, and I love nothing more – but I have responsibilities now, which hinder just how far I can go and for how long.

I think experiencing, living and studying abroad can make you a more confident person, and you have no choice than to become independent with family and friends not being there every time you ‘need’ them. For a few more thousand – could it be worth it for the experience of a lifetime? If only I could turn back the clock!
