The question of whether or not to get a job whilst being in college will cross most student’s thoughts at some time or another. These few years are a key lesson in balancing life; not only do you have your studies, time for family, time for friends, time for personal interests, time for time-out – but now you might have to take on a job too. If anyone is interested, I didn’t work during college – well, not entirely. I did the odd voluntary work which felt good and was beneficial for the experience; I also worked a little during the summer – but even that was pretty ‘relaxed’.
The positive to working of course is the money and the downside is also obvious – it takes precious time away from all your other duties. I personally think that if you can survive without one in the first year then it is better – you have to face so many changes as it is, and you want to make the best start possible with your chosen course.
Despite having a schedule that is bursting at the seams, there is no harm in trying to balance study with work and everything else. To make it easier on yourself, a job that is on campus or somewhere that is notable for taking on students is a good ‘first’ choice – these jobs and their employers will be more flexible and understanding should you run into burnout. The next decision is to determine how many hours you will work in the week, with 15-20 hours being a sensible way to go.
It is important to keep your head on your shoulders, and if you see grades slip due to work. You will have to either give up entirely (work that is!) or go for fewer hours – you don’t want to risk losing out on a scholarship. At the end of the day it is going to be different between individuals, and you will have to judge what is best for you and your grades.
